ExtraTasty.com: Cocktails 2.0

One of things that holds men back from cocktails is perceived cultural baggage; who wants to look like a twat ordering an affectation? First of all, that’s dumb—archetypal cocktails have ascended to eternal drinkhood.

But the other weight holding down cocktails are the sophomoric frighteners glugged together by teenage alchemists trying to mask the taste of by-the-gallon solvents in soda or juice. Anyone who has ever handed a plastic cup half-filled with smoking pond water and sputtered that its booze “really goes well with Mountain Dew” is partially responsible. (I’ve done my part, I’m ashamed to say.)

Cocktails, when first conceived, were part of the greater culinary landscape, the product of experiments in harmony. Like pop music, there was a time when everyone could enjoy the spectrum without worry about how a drink defined them.

I have a point, for serious, and this is it: Extra Tasty, the community-based drink recipe site from SkinnyCorp (the folks behind my beloved Threadless), adds a little Web 2.0 garnish to a community of cocktail creators who are developing fun new drinks with which to get lit.

Drinks are organized with tags, making it possible to track down drinks by ingredients (”Grenadine,” “Lime Juice,” “Vodka”) or context. (Okay, “party” is really the only contextual tag I can find so far, but there’s nothing stopping users for adding necessary tags like “funerals” and “road trips.”)

There’s the regular Web 2.0 friend-adding capabilities, but even features that will allow you to send a text message to Extra Tasty to receive a response with the drink recipe of your choice—perhaps a random selection or even one you’ve bookmarked earlier. Or if you want to skip all the phone hassle, just download the whole recipe library to your iPod—they have a tool for that, too.
