I agree that scent is a personal thing and also one of those things that attracts me to a woman. My current girlfriend isn't so much a cologne or perfume person (although she does have some nice ones). She mostly wears scented body lotions from Bath and Body Works and The Body Shop. One of my favorites is the chocolate scented one (we're both chocoholics) and she mixes it with another "flavor" like mint and man does that smell good. The best part about it (besides watching her apply it after a shower, heh) is when she stays over night and when I come home from work the next day my bedroom still smells like her.

I'm kind of weird about marrying a fragrance to a woman. I once dated a girl who wore Angel (not the Victorias Secret stuff) and now I can't buy that for my wife. Same is true of Romance, Chanel and Obsession - all worn by X's and now off limits to my wife.

I also can't buy her White Shoulders, but only because my mom wears it. That would just creep me out.

The only perfume I've ever been tempted/allowed/successful at purchasing was Cashmere Mist, which she'd decided over months of careful deliberation was to be her new Winter Fragrance (not counting the Christmas Fragrance -- Opium).

It was pre-approved, therefore I was almost expected to get it.

I'd never dare anything else, except replacing something that I was given to understand was still acceptable, and not passe.
