Until recently, Muslim women who lived in Western cultures but enjoyed the repressive, sexist modesty traditions of the Middle East had little choice but to wear burkas if they wished to enjoy a day at the beach with their infidel neighbors. Thanks Allah, an Australian designer has developed what she is calling the “burkini”: a full body swimsuit that covers everything but the hands, feet, and face. The designer claims it will help Muslim women integrate into Western society, but one has to wonder whether it won’t just make them stand out even more. [KNBC]
