sportsbarber.jpgI grew up in several small towns before moving to the suburbs of Kansas City right before my teens, so I’m neither charmed by nor resentful of them—they are what they are, with their own ups and downs. I am, however, amused by small town newspapers, which offer insight into a world too banal for comprehension. Case in point: This article in the Zanesville Times-Recorder, describing Jim Brown’s newly-opened “Sports Barber,” which offers haircuts with… TVs!

With reduced pricing for seniors and children under 5 and specials extended to area sports teams, veterans, safety personnel and wedding parties, the Sports Barber offers straight razor shaves, a service Brown said is becoming a rarity.

The effects of the bachelor party, Brown said, could be greatly diminished with a relaxing facial, making getting the groom and groomsmen ready for the wedding a pleasurable experience.

Kicking back for a straight razor shave and a facial while watching the game sounds just fine. That’s not provincial—that’s the future.

Of course, just when this small town has impressed us with their forward thinking, a lone commenter drops this hee-haw: “hay jr it big todd good artical see ya in the spring for that flat top.” Oh, Big Todd; so close!

There’s actually a whole chain of haircut places that has built its business on letting guys watch sports while they get their hair cut.

    Sports Clips – http://www.sportclips.com/

They have a (fortunately) idealized locker room decor with sports memorabilia everywhere. The haircuts are OK, and the prices aren’t bad. No straight razor shaves here — think Supercuts with Sports on the TV. My favorite part is that they have WiFi in each location, so I can check e-mail and surf the web on my phone while I wait.

    Here’s another chain:

They used to give beer at the Mountain View, CA location, but someone from the city complained. I don’t know if they do at other locations. But they have soft drinks, coffee, TV, etc.
