281x211.jpgLook, I know I’m supposed to be boycotting anything and everything Mel Gibson, but every brilliant filmmaker worth a damn is at least a little bit crazy and has some whacked opinions. Besides, them Jews started all the wars anyway. Consider William Wallace and Longshanks from Braveheart. Both of them were Jews – right, Sugartits?

Some flicks need to be seen on a big screen. If supporting this man’s art is too guilty a pleasure, do like I did and pay to see something else, then sneak into this picture afterwards. Despite all the negative feedback about historical inaccuracies and the like, it remains one of the few movies available that focuses on pre-conquistador Maya peoples. It’s edumacational!

(Besides, the real reason to see it is the outrageous violence and the pimped-out warriors who do it. Now I want to wear jawbones on my arms and wear a snappy headdress.)

As far as guilt in paying money to see Mel Gibson’s film, I find it ironic that some people I know who refuse to see this movie because of the director didn’t have a problem paying to see The Pianist, directed by Roman Polanski who was convicted of statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl. At least Gibson had the balls to face up to his mistake. Coward Polanski remains a fugitive in the US.

I actually went and saw it on Saturday, and I loved it. I always appreciate it when a movie shows a way to kill someone or show them die in a way I haven’t seen depicted before. And I think it’s a really interesting topic, and one that hasn’t been portrayed much in film, especially from the point of view of the indigenous folk. I’ve been to some of the ruins in Mexico, and they’re HUGE, and that really helped put some of the movie in perspective. It gets a thumbs up from me.
