Getting Things Started: The Brain Dump
4 Comments Published by Joel January 3rd, 2007 in DIY. Share ThisWhile I’m enjoying this week’s theme, we’re far from the first to discuss some of the thought behind setting and keeping goals. Our friends at Lifehacker and 43 Folders are everyday stalwarts on the subject and will help keep you motivated long after I’ve lost all hope for self-improvement and have started writing about how to let prune juice ferment in a sock again.
A big inspiration for both those sites is the book/planning system Getting Things Done, which I suggest to anyone preoccupied with listing and cataloging their goals and to-dos. Again, without treading too far into their territory, I’d like to steal a page out of GTD that I’ve found useful, even though I haven’t fully integrated the system into my workflow. (I find GTD useful as an occasional “circle the wagons” tool, but don’t have the wherewithal to keep it up on a daily basis.)
The first step in GTD is to dash out everything you think you might be interested or compelled to do, from gratifying trifle to life-shaking event. From there you can organize and index your goals, but I often find it an extremely useful trick just to take a piece of paper or a text file (or a blog post, after the jump) and to dump every little thought that pops into my head over the course of an hour or two without any attempt to prioritize the items themselves.
Feel free to dump your list in the comments, should you please, but it’s far from necessary, especially if it will somehow prevent you from being completely candid about your goals. I think taking half-an-hour at the beginning of the year to dump all the floating ideas in my head feels great, even if I don’t end up doing much to follow up on them.

Have you seen 43things.com? It’s not really GTD-related, but it’s a handy site for keeping track of goals like this.
Tip on the pen: buy some pilot G2’s or G6’s and some Mont Blanc rollerball refills.
cut the plastic back ends of the refills with a non serrated knife, stick them in the G2’s or G6’s body, and whamo, instant Mont Blanc for a fraction of the price.
For notebooks, check out Rhodia pads. They’re wonderful to write on and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

I just did my kickoff brain dump yesterday. Took my Moleskine (GTD, to go), emptied all the unfinished projects/actions/everything onto a big paper, and went through them. Turns out, I had a lot more projects than I thought, and a lot of stuff I needed to stop procrastinating.
Biggest thing I’ve realized: my brain kicks into dump mode shortly after working out (weights or running). I took my phone and ended up with 12 text messages sent to myself full of ideas.
I’m a Fisher Space Pen guy, myself, kickin it 43Folders.com old school style. The Bullet model goes with me everywhere in my pants pocket, and I keep a longer (titanium!) one at the office, strictly because I saw the titanium pen on Ebay and had to have it.
I had eschewed “New years resolutions” as one of my snarky buddies always referred to them as “the first lie of the new year.” Although he’s pretty much right on, I’ve decided to make a list of shit I want to accomplish in ‘07. Otherwise I just won’t get anything done, and I don’t want or need another year of that.
The main one that I need to get started on soon is to learn some Thai for a December trip to Thailand.
