While the Bar Remains Low: Non-Newtonian Fluid Hijinx Video
Published by Joel December 19th, 2006 in Movies, Tonic. Share ThisApparently if you get just the right amount of corn starch mixed with water—and mix it in ample amounts in the back of a concrete truck—you get a liquid that behaves normally under low pressure, but like a solid under stronger pressure.
Then you make grown Italian Spanish men run across it shouting and hollering.
I’m pretty sure they’re Spaniards.
It’s all the same! Free Tibet! No Nukes for Oil!
I used to make that stuff as a kid, its really neat. I can’t imagine having a vat of it though. Who knows, my birthday is coming up!
How do you make this wonderful stuff?? I would love to do this while drunk at home with friends!! LMAO
Too bad they didn’t show when happens if you vibrate the hell out of it.
Ok, I’ll bite.
Tell me ThinkandDrive, what does happen to that stuff if you vibrate the hell out of it?
I’m guessing that vibrating the fluid at the appropriate frequency would cause it to behave like a normal newtonian fluid. And to answer the question of what the hell a non-newtonian fluid is, I present wikipedia.
Stunts like these usually leave me “big deal” at best, annoyed at worst.
This one was kinda charming, though. Extra credit fior the de rigueur “going down with the ship” stance.
Darn it! Where’s the preview button, Joel?!?!!
Is that guy in white Clay Aiken? :)
Hey, all the italian men speak a mean spanish.
Why were the “Italian men” speaking Spanish?
We used to make this stuff in college as a party trick. We always called it “oobleck”.

The Wikipedia article says it’s “1 part water to 1.5–2 parts cornstarch”, but our recipe was usually closer to 1:1, testing as ye go.
The thing to remember is to NOT dump the whole thing down the kitchen sink when you’re done…
it’s italian. i promise.
