cashmeretopcoatjosbank.jpgMen’s apparel store Jos. A. Bank is having a pretty good sale on their topcoats, sweaters, leather jackets, and lots of other stuff, both in stores and online. (Apparently “Jos” is pronounced “Joss-Uh,” not “Joss,” at least according to the dude on the radio this morning. Who knew?) That’s still not going to be rock-bottom prices—even on sale we’re talking between $100 and $200 for most items—but it does look to be a legitimate sale on quality items. I am personally having a difficult time resisting the Executive 2-Button Harris Tweed Sportcoat for $200 (normally $500), seeing how I intend to spruce up my trip to Las Vegas in January with a variety of suit-class outfits.

And don’t miss the coats! The wool/cashmere blend full-length topcoat [pictured] is available in a variety of colors (including camel) for just $120. That’s a great deal.

That’s a pretty sweet sale, though I was planning on looking for a new overcoat after Christmas. I haven’t shopped at a Jos. A. Bank before but there are a couple in my town. How is the quality? Good?

I have quite a bit of their stuff, and I’ve found their quality to be hit-or-miss. (Their no-wrinkle cotton pants in particular are crap. Go to Brooks Brothers.) I bought one of their wool/cashmere coats two winters ago, and while the exterior still looked okay, it suddenly developed quite a few tears, holes in the lining, etc, and the buttons were *always* falling off.

Having said that, I discovered that I was a size smaller this winter (which meant I now had a ratty *and* oversized coat) and I ended up replacing it with another Jos. A. Bank model. My thinking is that it’ll last long enough for me to get down to my final size and decide whether or not I want to keep living in the land of ice and snow.

Short story — if you want something very nice and reasonably durable, look elsewhere. (I definitely won’t be getting my eventual cashmere coat from them.) But if you’re okay with the limitations, and the price is right, it’s not a bad deal.

I lost respect for this retailer a few years ago on my first visit…
walked in and one of the sales guys was wearing a navy sport coat
and black pants. I walked right back out the door….
