Since my mom tends to buy me stuff from my Amazon wish list for Christmas, I end up getting my gifts soon after she actually buys them—and waiting to open gifts is for kids and suckers. The first thing I’ve gotten is a set of these Lands’ End Silk Interlock long underwear ($50 for the set; Thanks, Mom!). I wore them Saturday night for the first time and am pretty pleased.
They aren’t the warmest set of long underwear I’ve ever had—some of the newer synthetic mesh knits definitely hold in heat better—but it’s definitely the most comfortable set I’ve ever own. Swishing around in a set of black, skintight silk not only adds a layer of friction reduction but makes me feel like I’m properly equipped for unforeseen moments of preternatural stealth. They should box each set with a flash bang and a smoke bomb.
Would I suggest them for hardcore outdoor wear? Definitely not—they just don’t hold in enough heat. But for casual city trekking they have given a solid first impression. I walked around in high-forties winds with just the silkies on under a t-shirt, pants, and hoodie and was plenty comfortable (although I would not have minded a hat or a scarf just to lock it all in).
