Spend a bit more and get some nice (but not necessary ) features--like auto surround selection--which sets the surround mode accordfing to input choice. Also get yourself a nice Harmony remote--best remote on the market.

I got a really nice deal on a Panasonic all-in-one a couple of years ago. Nice enough that I couldn't turn it down. I have to say that it's been very serviceable, and the sound is certainly nice enough for my needs. I'm not saying the all-in-ones are always a good deal, but it's not necessarily good to reject them out-of-hand. YMMV.

I agree. I have several friends who get huge 7.1 surround rigs for their 1000 square foot APARTMENTS and hook up projectors to put a 100-inch plus image on the wall. Ridiculous.

Best line in that whole article: "ain’t no Dolby DTS on the streets." Ahahahaha

Another moderately priced upscaling DVD player is the <a href="http://www.neodigits.com/new/body/products/h4000/h4000.asp" rel="nofollow">Helios H4000<a>.

Does anyone have any recommendations for simplifying setups for less than technical users? I have a Dish DVR and a GoVideo VCR/DVD player which both have remotes with some oddball buttons so I would like people to simply use those for controlling things. However, turning the TV and receiver on and switching to the right input is the difficult part. I don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money on a touchscreen style remote to replace all of these. Plus everyone seems less intimidated by a couple remotes specific to which ever device they're using.

I have a low end Denon Receiver and I would recommend it to most people. Very simple to use, lots of inputs, great quality and at a very reasonable price (about 150 for the model I have). All in all, I would say that Denon gives the best bang for the buck from what I've seen out there.

I would love to get your comments on Pioneer HTS-260 600 Watt Home Theater System. Good number of digital and analog inputs, all the receiver equipment is in the Subwoofer, and the controls stay on the small screen.

It also HTS-GS1 that matches my 360.

I concur... I recently purchased a $150 RCA 5.1 system from Wal-Hell. It was shit. The sound is decent, but the receiver crapped out within a week. Since I didn't want to have to pack up the whole thing, I went and bought a second one, swapped receivers, took it back, and got my money back. The new receiver has been working fine, but I'm looking into another system, so recommend me one!
