Modest Gifts: Sheepskin Moccasins

Susie bought me a pair of these Whistler Moccasins from Sheepskin.com last winter. Despite the initial dispersal of flattery I felt when opening a 13-inch-long box labeled “Sheepskin,” they’re probably one of the best gifts I’ve ever gotten.
First off, they’re warm as hell—real wool will do that—so skip these if you live in areas given to mild winters. And the rubber soles, which I first thought would make them uncomfortable, are great for making quick runs downstairs to pick up packages or to head out on the balcony for a fast smoke.
Now don’t get me wrong: They’re ugly and a far, bleating cry from stylish. But you don’t make slippers out of the inverted skin of an animal and expect to deviate too far from the standard form.
At $46 a pop they aren’t cheap, but they’ve held up extremely well over the last year—and I’ve worn them nearly every day. (Just be sure to pick up some of the special shampoo to give them an occasional wash.)
I thought they were a really silly gift—a gift for an old man!—but now I wouldn’t want to lounge without them.

I’ll second that whole-heartedly. While I can’t vouch for my particular brand (because I don’t know where they came from,) I can vouch for the warmth, comfort, and durability of sheepskin slippers. I’ve had mine for years and they’re still just as comfortable as ever. They’ve held up to wet and even some snowy trips to the garage and the mailbox, and mine don’t even have a rubber sole.
My wife can’t stand them, and I don’t know how the animal works better inside-out, but they’re great.
Had some, loved them. Mine were from Lands’ End or maybe Eddie Bauer, one of the catalog places. Got some for myself and the ex.
Well those are gone now but I have a really nice pair of moosehide without the lining but they do have the rubber sole. Maybe not “as” warm but after a long day in your work shoes, just getting yer tired sweaty feet out of your socks and into these is great.
Joel is right, they might not be high fashion, but screw that they are well worth it.
Fur lined shoes of any type are ++
Is it OK to wear these without socks, or will that ruin the fur?
I have worn mine without socks many times, but that tends to make the feet sweat a bit. I find they feel much better all around with socks.
