ds-x.jpgSure, you can use a DS Flash Cart for playing homebrew games, but most people would use the little magic boxes for playing pirated, commercially-released games they’ve downloaded from the internet. I make a fair amount of my living writing about video games, so I really do make an honest effort to buy or rent most of the games I play. At the same time, I don’t really have a lot of guilt about downloading an obscure Japanese DS game just to poke around or trying a game before I buy.

Between copies of games I own and copies of games I don’t, I’ve easily filled the DS-Xtreme cart’s 512MB of flash memory. Older DS carts needed all sorts of strange magic to work, but the DS-X is plug-and-play; even copying games over to it is as simple as plugging in the included USB cable to your PC or Mac. If you’ve got a hankering to try some homebrew DS software or just want to be a filthy pirate, the ~$130 DS-Xtreme would be a welcome gift for any Nintendork.

A buddy of mine has this and absolutely loves it. Stick 4 or 5 games on there, some MP3s, he even has a personal organizer on it. Makes me think I need to go pick up a DS.
