If you want to get it right with cologne then go to a store that has samples (the Macy's mens store in SF is the one I use) and go with a female friend. Try on samples (she'll show you what to do) and wait 5 minutes and then have her check them and tell you which one works best.

Colognes mutate with your body chemistry to create a final scent. You need to get an opinion based on the combination.

If you do the above you will get a great result. I ended up with Lagerfeld and it always gets positive comments. I never would have chosen it on my own.

Also, <a href="http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k256/billturner23/Picture1-1.png" rel="nofollow">double sweet-meat irony</a>.

Here's what you do if you want to always smell good and not overwhelming:

Grab your cologne right out of the shower when your body is still wet. Not *drenched*, just moist and warm.

Hold the bottle in front of you, do three good sized bursts right at eye level in front of you, away from you. As it falls, walk forward briskly for a few steps; the manouver will grace your body in a well-dispersed coat of scent - the key is the dispersion.
Too much of a scent in a concentrated area is always bad, even on the pulse points. that's how it gets overwhelming. But since it's very spread out like that, it'll be like a quiet hum instead of a brash trumpet.

Also key is doing it on wet skin; for some reason it tends to last all night long - there's another tip: cologne is not permitted during day hours, that's tacky tacky tacky. But at night it's tasteful. Don't ask me why, but those are the rules.
