Blocks like those are also used in Iraq, I wouldn't doubt if they were very common throughout Asia. In many ways they are superior considering the climate and applications of them. Unfortunately, this is quite a common mode of live transport in the Far East. Yes, chickens do freak when they are first grabbed, but once their legs are tied they gradually become kind of frozen in shock. As for the pigs, again this is commonplace. Look at the way their legs are bent - not possible with a dead animal because of rigor mortis.
