I'm a fitness freak and I started working the kettlebell a week ago. I ordered a 16Kg on ebay and I'm following the exercices I find on Youtube, by Ryan Shanahan. I love it. I felt the effect of it right after the first workout. I ordered two 8 kilos for some exercices I can't do with the 16Kg one.

Everyone told me to start with the 24 Kg but I'm happy to start with the smaller one. It's tough!!!!

I don't mind buying the big one in a month or so. It's better than getting discusted right away and getting injured.......

The Monkey Bar gym in Madison is quite an experience... I left the gym feeling like someone had just beat me with a monkey wrench... Bottom line kettle bells will work those Funyuns and Mt. Dew Code Reds right off that flabby ass of yours!

I was introduced to kettleballs in classes I took to train for my rugby team.

I'm pretty small and don't do a lot of weight training, because I don't want to be some muscle-bound mama. But our trainer had us use the kettleballs to strengthen our core and once you figured out the proper movements, it was a really great workout. We trained at a gym here in Madison, http://www.monkeybargym.com/.

By the way, really like Dethroner.

These guys appear to be all about the kettlebell:

http://www.gymjones.com/

From what I can tell, they're nuts enough to justify the punny name. Found them a few months back via a behind-the-scenes video of guys training for comic book movie "300."

I use them a few times a week, but that's part of the Crossfit class that I go to. Kettlebells are great though. You can get one hell of a workout with a 24kg kettlebell in about 20 minutes. When was the last time you got a good workout with a single 50-lb dumbbell?

Clubbells also rock the house--mainly because THEY'RE BIG FRIKKING CLUBS. If you really want to go caveman, they're a ton of fun. http://www.clubbells.co.uk/

I have used the off and on for a year.

It's basically a rotary dumbell, but it allows you to do a variety of olympic style lifts (which are the standard exercises in the NFL) which burn a ton of calories and build strength, speed, and power like nothing else. Mens Health has featured olympic style lifts recently.

I can do hang cleans, snatches, cleans, etc., with a kettlebell much, much, easier than I can with a barbell. It's way easier to perform those lifts and get the same benefit because you are manipulating the weight without the bar and you have a lot more flexibility of movement.

I get easily bored and switch up workouts a lot, and I always come back to the KB's. I can grab this and do one exercise that basically incorporates a deadlift, squat, overhead press in one move and hit most bodyparts. Not to mention its killer cardio.

I purchased it as my "cannot get to the gym" tool and to be honest, I see more results from it in less time. Probably because the intensity is so high.

I have a 35lb and a 53lb, and they seem pricey, but for how complete a workout you can get, its easily my best workout investment.

Try bodybuilding.com for some exercises and programs.

Incidentally, I used one for weeks just for cardio (high rep snatches) not designed to really build muscle but as a winter alternative to running outside. The olympic snatch is pretty balanced in terms of muscle used so it doesnt really stress one bodypart over another. I found later in basketball that my vertical had improved a ton.

In summary, it's really the olympic style lifts that do the magic. The kettlebells are just the easiest way to learn them without fear of injury i have seen.

Hm, sounds a lot like Shovelglove. I've been Shovelgloving instead of going to the gym for about the past 6 weeks now. Not only is it as effective as lifting (I've done a lot of "binge" lifting: go for a couple months, stop for a few, back for three, so I've watched muscle definition come and go), but it's less time intensive, and much more enjoyable.

There's a forum on the SGlove site about it, and Reinhard (the "creator") is really easy to get a hold of. You should do a writeup on it :D

kettle bells are great, it takes alot of core work to stablize your body while you press them, additionally if you hold the kettle bell upright, with the round part up, above the handle, it adds alot more to the excersize as you have to balance it... or you know send a 35 pound weight plunging down onto your head and crushing it into a thick goo

Kostya Tszyu at least used to use 'em, but then Ricky Hatton smacked him around and I think he's retired now... Not a great endorsement, I guess.

About a year and a half ago I got really curious about 'em. It turns out they may be more Scottish in origin than Russian, but who can really say? The Russkies are the only ones still actively using them, I suppose. I ended up not being able to justify spending so much for lumps of metal.
