Roller Derby: Girls Really Can Do Everything Better

Sometimes a tip comes in that is so well-formed that I don’t even have to edit it. This one, from Frankenbike, is one of them:
I noticed that fighting is this weeks theme. I also noticed that there isn’t one thing about the new wave of all-women’s roller derby.Wherever you are in the country, chances are there’s a flat track roller derby league nearby. In LA and Austin there are the only two women’s banked track leagues, The LA Derby Dolls and Lonestar Rollergirls.
A lot of bars around the country are showing an LA Derby Dolls game in HiDef Oct 20 at 10pm EST: http://www.hd.net/op_sports.html. [HDNet has a sports bar finder. -Ed.]
These aren’t the phoney, staged games of the 70s. The women play to win, play by rules, nothing is staged. And did I mention they wear short skirts?
Two of my favorite things: drinking and watching women in short skirts on wheels knocking the crap out of each other.
Don’t forget Rollergirls, the documentary series from A&E (and from the producers of Laguna Beach!), which followed the girls of the Austin TXRD league.

Baltimore’s Charm City Girls, co-founded by a member of the TXRD leagure) just wrapped up their season recently. I didn’t get to go this season. But after seeing their website, I’m definitely going to make it next season. *drools*
Yeah these girls have the hot Suicide Girls, Alt girl sex apeal all over them. Too bad the girlfriend would kick my ass for drooling on the TV.
My wife and I regularly take in Rocky Mountain Roller Girls bouts here in Denver.
Tallboy PBRs and hot all-girl derby action: It’s fun for the whole family!
One of the Austin Rollergirls set up a league down here in Grand Cayman a couple years back. My then-girlfriend got involved with it, and needed help re-learning to skate on four wheels again, so I went out skating with her a few times, and then, since, you know, they couldn’t find anyone else, I ended up being one of the refs for the league. You think it’s hot watching from the sidelines? :)
Down here in North Carolina, the Carolina Rollergirls play to ever-increasing numbers now that they’ve moved over to Dorton Arena at the State Fairgrounds. Additionally, two of them will be participating in this year’s State Fair Demolition Derby. Very entertaining!
