Was surfing Uncrate — with your insight into fashion, can you please explain to me how the hell Dolce & Gabbana can justify $700 for an army coat?!

In short: They can’t. You should head to an Army Surplus store and get something similar—and genuine—for $50 or so. As is the case with so many things, the European versions tend to be way more stylish. (The Eastern European variations can be fantastic; Keep an eye out for the rocking, stand-on-their-own wool pants, too.)
Of course, if you don’t have a good Army Surplus that stocks Euro in your neighborhood, you’ll be forced to buy online. That’s where I’ll fail you miserably: I’ve yet to find any decently-priced military surplus stores on the internet that aren’t charging a ridiculously high premium. (The exception being, very occasionally, eBay.)

I dig wearing military surplus gear, though, especially in the winter. Has anyone found a good Euro military surplus store online with which they’ve had a good experience? I’ve found a few places in New York that have reasonable prices, but it’s mostly American-issue gear.

I don’t get Uncrate. A friend forwarded me the link, but from what I can see, it’s just a series of ads…

I shop at I.Goldberg in philly. They have a great selection of outdoor/work/camping wear, as well as a whole basement full of army/navy surplus. You can find everything from P-coats to gas masks to space suits to whatever you can think of. From almost any country in the world.

    Try Sciplus.com

They’re not huge on apparel, but what they have is cheap, the packs are nice:

I require one brown leather flappy hat as worn by pre-war aviators and mad edwardian car drivers. The stuff on ebay and motorcycle stores is either too tatty or too modernized…. Can anyone help?
